You can purchase the update to version 4 at eovia's website, www.eovia.com Quoted from MacAddict: New Page 1 While most of the excitement and attention in the 3D realm usually goes to high-end offerings such as Maya ($1,999, www.alias.com) and Cinema 4D R8 XL ($1,695, www.maxon.net), the average graphic designer is likely overwhelmed by the difficult learning curve and corresponding price tag typical of that lofty realm. But fear not: The latest incarnation of Carrara offers a decent set of capabilities coupled with a straightforward interface and downright luscious rendering results. Carrara Studio 3 is a balanced combination of overall modeling, animation, and rendering capabilities, and it includes just about everything you need to do basic 3D work. But we need to get our two main gripes out of the way: As we lamented in our review of Carrara Studio 2 (Jan/03, p48), the app's interface engulfs your entire screen, disabling the OS X dock and menubar—Eovia should have fixed this interface no-no in the interim. Also, there's still no support for network rendering, which is a real drawback if you have unused computing power on your network and you're trying to complete a render as fast as possible. On the plus side, Carrara 3 introduces a new Scene Wizard, which contains a variety of templates for packaging, logos, architectural and special-effects elements, and other projects. This is a great addition for artists intimidated by new, blank documents. Once you select a scene, it's easy to edit or replace existing elements, such as the text included in a logo treatment. Carrara Studio 3 is organized into separate screens—or rooms—for modeling, texturing, storyboarding, assembling, and rendering, each with their own specific tools. The overall selection of modeling and animation tools is mostly unchanged since our last review, with some subtle improvements in overall workflow. New tweaks to the modeling tools include improved vertex/subdivision handling, which makes the extrusion tool more dynamic and yields smoother surfaces on extruded objects. If you're designing natural landscapes, an exceedingly capable Tree Modeler gives you full control over leaves, branch shapes, and more. The advanced tree editing dialog (see top of facing page), however, is downright terrifying—unless you are planning on terraforming a new planet, it may not be worth your while trying to master it. Rendering gets a whole lot of attention in version 3, with raytraced soft shadows and significantly nicer global-illumination quality—all without the hefty processor-performance price of real radiosity techniques. A slick new addition is support for HDRI (high dynamic range images) processing, a way-cool way to use specific types of image maps as lighting sources that results in a breathtaking photorealism not easily achieved otherwise. Carrara's Non-Photorealistic rendering mode automatically creates cartoon and sketch styles from renderings. We're not sure if we like the idea of incorporating this into the rendering process, though—we'd prefer the time-saving ability to swap filters in and out without affecting our initial high-quality render so that in case we don't like an effect, we don't have to start over from scratch. Speaking of production, Carrara's new alpha-channel support is a welcome—and crucial—improvement, allowing you to render individual elements separately and combine them with other objects and different backgrounds after they're rendered. This type of functionality is critical for professional graphics and video-production tasks. New shader types (including fractal noise and color gradients), volumetric lights (for more realistic atmospheric density effects), and sky dome illumination round out the rendering offerings, and are important—if not earth-shattering—enhancements to the application. Overall, Carrara is still not the end-all-and-be-all 3D application for industrial-strength tasks, but for artists who need to break into the universe beyond two dimensions, it provides a fairly straight line between creative ideas and (virtually) tangible results. —David Biedny Quoted from Macworld: Although Eovia's Carrara Studio 3 boasts an impressive list of new features, such as HDRI (High Dynamic Range Imaging) support and new controls for subdivision surfaces modeling, it's the program's $399 price tag that will sway many people. But don't let its modest price fool you -- Carrara has a large array of high-end tools, wrapped in a package that new and experienced users will find comfortable. Originally developed by MetaCreations, Carrara has an interface similar in form and function to that of packages such as Bryce and Kai's Power Tools, both from Corel, and Curious Labs' Poser. If you're familiar with any of these programs, you'll recognize many of Carrara's modeling and navigation tools. Interface Issues Carrara's workspace is divided into separate "rooms," or modes, that provide environments for modeling, scene building, texturing, and animation. This setup is great for beginners, but the program's modal approach may frustrate some experienced users. For instance, the dialog boxes and other interface elements force you into a particular mode, rather than letting you move freely from one function to another. Because arranging and modeling are in two separate rooms, you can't arrange models as you are modeling, which is a drag if you want to see how changes in one model fit in with other models in your scene. Also, the program's three projection planes create a somewhat cluttered workspace. New Modeling Tools Carrara offers a number of new modeling tools such as subdivision surfaces (sub-D) modeling, spline modeling, and powerful Booleans. A new creasing feature lets you create hard edges in your sub-D models. Eovia has optimized all modeling tools for better performance, and the Spline modeler now includes a Bevel option. The biggest addition to the modeling room is the completely new Tree Maker, which allows you to edit and customize 26 basic tree shapes to create everything from simple potted plants to entire forests. Carrara 3 includes both a UV Editor, for creating precise texture maps, and a much faster Vertex Modeler. Better Rendering Carrara's ray tracer has always produced beautiful results, but version 3 packs some much-needed modern rendering features. HDRI is a different approach to calculating realistic-looking lighting. It uses a special HDR image, which wraps around the outside of your scene. The color information in the HDR file defines not just lighting intensity but also subtle color shifts and shadow hues. HDRI renderings are more realistic than normal lighting techniques and don't require complicated light setups. The new Non-Photorealistic Renderer lets you create everything from toon styles to natural-media renderings that look like paint, chalk, watercolors, or pencil. You'll need to experiment to get the hang of the controls, but the Non-Photorealistic Renderer is quite speedy. Other rendering improvements include soft shadows in the program's ray tracer, an improved Global Illumination rendering engine, and alpha-channel rendering.
